Christmas Cactus

We bought this Cactus at the Lalbagh Flower show. This show takes place every January during the Indian Republic day. When we bought this cactus, it had one small little flower bud. It was only until december, this cactus showed its true beauty. Suddenly this cactus started popping out small buds at every leaf end and the magic happened between 4th dec to 7th dec. The cactus was in full bloom. (see video below of the transistion)

Later when i checked on the net, I came to know it was a Christmas Cactus. Its so called because it blooms flowers only during the time of Christmas. Also this cactus grows at a elevations between 3300 to 5600 feet. And thankfuly our bangalore is at the perfect elevation for such cactus to grow.

My Aquarium

This is my sweet little aquarium. I am maintaining it for the past 5 years. I have some gold fish, SK Gold , shark and one Sucker cat. I dont like plastic plants and what you see in the video below are live plants. I feed my marine friends alternate days. At nights i switch of the aquarium lights. Because fishes dont have eye lids, having continious light will make them restless. Also switching off lights in the night gives them the sense of day & night.

Tips to a healthy aquarium

  • Avoid plastic plants, go for natural water plants
  • Maintain appropriate warm temperature during winters
  • Install a good water filter and clean the filter every week
  • Dont keep the Aquarium light 'ON' the whole night. Fishes dont have eye lids, so by switching off lights in the night will make them relaxed
  • Make sure enough oxygen is fed to the water through your filter. Fishes depend solely on dissolved oxygen in water

Wooden cloth clips better over plastic ones

As per my observations over many years, I have realised Wooden cloth clips are much reliable and long-lasting compared to the plastic ones. Plastics have a very peculair property, they loose their strength and become brittle when exposed to sun for long time. On an average a plastic clip may last for 3 or 4 months, depending on the plastic quality. But a wooden clip lasts much longer than that. They can withstand all temperature/season and do not loose strength. And even after it breaks or looses strength, it can become part of the earth and decompose easily.

If you are one of those eco-caring types, start using wooden clips. Dont worry about trees being cut for that. Coz all these wooden clips are made from waste wood pieces.

Plastic clips break after they become brittle.
