Bird hits on airplane

In the wake of the recent bird strikes on airplanes, I got this crazy idea. Well technically I don’t know much about airplanes. But I was wonder if something can be done on the plane engines which can prevent birds hitting it. I feel this can be achieved by developing a kind of mesh/grill in front of the engine. (See example in images below). This way birds wont get sucked in engine and help avoid huge catastrophes. What do you think guys? Please give me your comments.

At least this way we don’t have to chase birds away from their natural habitats near airports. Birds should no longer become a problem to airports. They too should fly happily with their mechanical big brother. J

  2. According to the news link below, a screen or grate in front of the engine would produce turbulence in the air behind it, and what the engine needs is a smooth flow of air. If the flow is disrupted, the compressor at the front of the engine may stall, causing the engine to lose lift.
