Bird hits on airplane

In the wake of the recent bird strikes on airplanes, I got this crazy idea. Well technically I don’t know much about airplanes. But I was wonder if something can be done on the plane engines which can prevent birds hitting it. I feel this can be achieved by developing a kind of mesh/grill in front of the engine. (See example in images below). This way birds wont get sucked in engine and help avoid huge catastrophes. What do you think guys? Please give me your comments.

At least this way we don’t have to chase birds away from their natural habitats near airports. Birds should no longer become a problem to airports. They too should fly happily with their mechanical big brother. J
